Step 5: track the selected plan against recorded activity each month.
On this page
Debt Payoff Path has five stages. In Sequencer (Steps 1–4), build or select a saved scenario. In Payoff Path (Step 5), start an eligible scenario and compare its Modeled schedule with recorded balances as time passes. Open Toolkit → All Tools → Debt Payoff Path to begin.
How Liabilities, Sequencer, and Payoff Path Fit Together
The workflow has three separate jobs:
Liabilities is the factual debt inventory. It stores each tracked obligation, current balance, balance history, rate, term, and payment facts.
Sequencer (Steps 1–4) is the modeling workspace. It can start from Liabilities records or manual entries, then compare free a payment first, highest rate first, lowest balance first, your own order, and optional whole life banking paths with Modeled output.
Payoff Path (Step 5, Track monthly) is the operating plan once tracking starts. An unchanged saved plan is tracked as itself, not copied; Sequencer's Step 5 · Payoff Path link opens it. Saving the plan you track updates its open month's unrecorded steps and later months; recorded months stay locked. It keeps the starting scenario as the fixed Modeled baseline, then records Actual balances and payments against each month.
An advisor can build a Sequencer scenario for a linked client and send it to the client's account. The client reviews the plan in Payoff Path. Opening the shared view or printable view does not start tracking.
Starting opens debt matching first. It shows how many debts will be added to Liabilities, then lets the client link each debt to an existing record or add it as new. If a linked liability's recorded balance differs from the plan, the client chooses which balance to carry forward. Each new liability needs the client's confirmation, lender, and original amount; the original amount is never inferred from the current balance, and 0 is accepted for revolving credit. creates the client-owned path from that scenario version and those choices. A plan without a modelable whole life banking layer cannot start; the client sees why and can ask the advisor to send a new plan with one.
Start Payoff Path
Until setup is complete, the Payoff Path detail page shows a Before you begin checklist for anything still open — debts linked, balances confirmed, the policy basis chosen, and a payment or balance recorded. Existing policies selected in an existing-policy Sequencer plan carry into Payoff Path automatically; the first eligible selection becomes the policy-loan action target. You can change the selection in the policy section. If no policies were selected, choose recorded policies or keep the plan Modeled-only. Skipping actions alone does not count as an Actual. The checklist disappears once every applicable item is met.

Record This Month
This month opens in the Month by month table, one row per debt in payoff order. Use Record payment and Record balance, or Skip what did not happen.
When the plan takes or repays a policy loan this month, a Policy loan row comes first. Recording it adds it to the policy's loan record. Loan balance now is the policy's current loan; the balance after it is Modeled. A policy loan already recorded on the policy's Loans tab this month shows under the row. Ready to review, or Record policy loan, opens a review that compares it with the plan, and asks which one when there are several; Use for counts it as this month's policy loan without recording it twice, and Record a different loan records another. Either way, the month's policy loan pays down the plan's debts in the projection.
A connected debt shows Ready to review when a synced balance dated this month arrives. Review balance, then Lock in for , records it as that month's balance. Later syncs don't change it; syncs dated after the month go to the next one. Use a different number opens manual entry instead. Where the institution allows it, Refresh requests a new balance.
Paid Off
When a recorded payment or balance brings a debt to $0, its row shows Paid off. The next month shows where its freed payment goes, per your saved plan: the next debt, your policy loan, paid-up additions, or stays with you.
Finish the Month
Finish is available once every row is recorded or skipped. It locks the month; later months recalculate. After the final month, Reopen month reopens it. Finishing does not move money or create a lender transaction.
Balance left on the Debt Freedom card is Home's current total of your debts, excluding real estate. A finished month shows the balances you recorded, so the two can differ.
Edit a Recorded Value
Recorded values are locked. Unlock one to edit it, then Save; Cancel leaves it as recorded. An edit shows Override; Use synced returns a synced balance. Editing a finished month recalculates planned months only. Later months keep their recorded values.
A balance Override on a bank-synced debt doesn't change Liabilities. A payment edit corrects Liabilities the way recording did, unless a newer balance exists.
Recast from a Tracked Liability
When a liability is tracked by an active Payoff Path, editing that liability's balance in Liabilities can show how the new balance changes the debt-free date. From that modal, choose Update position only to save the liability balance without changing the path, or Update & recast plan to record the new balance into the active Payoff Path and re-project later months from that Actual point.
Recast does not rewrite the original scenario, historical Actual months, or closed-period history. It records the current position and updates the forward view from there.
Optional Policy Selection
Policies selected in an existing-policy Sequencer plan carry into Payoff Path. The first eligible selection becomes the primary policy-loan action target. Use Change selected policies to update the current Actual Net Cash Value pool or primary policy. If no policies were selected, Choose policies links recorded policies; selecting none keeps the path Modeled-only. Future growth and policy loans remain Modeled. Policy selection does not change the saved scenario or create a policy loan.
Premium per month shows the base and paid-up additions premium the plan pays for its recorded policy. Edit saves a new premium to the plan from the open month and rebuilds the projected cash value from the confirmed illustration for that premium; recorded months don't change. A plan with several policies, or a premium not paid monthly, changes its premium in Step 2. An advisor's premium change is sent to you as a suggestion and applies when you accept it.
Payoff Path is Step 5 of the Builder Pro Debt Payoff Path workflow. If it is not available in your environment, start with Sequencer and check your plan access. It tracks a selected plan against recorded activity.
